Biomechanics and Equipment | Football Exchange

Biomechanics and Equipment

The staff members who work in football-related areas of Biomechanics and Equipment are Dr. Mark Lake, Dr. Mark Robinson and Dr. Jos Vanrenterghem. Staff members work in football-related areas, such as technique analysis, strength and conditioning, injury prevention and gait assessment service, and the design and evaluation of football equipment and playing surfaces. An example of on-going work in this discipline is the detailed technical analysis of the different football skills, such as kicking, throw-ins, headers and goalkeeping. High-speed three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic analysis is used to describe the involvement of both specific joints and muscle groups in actions such as kicking. These approaches have been used to evaluate more applied research questions such as the impact of player characteristics (e.g., gender) and the effects of musculo-skeletal fatigue on the biomechanics of kicking and the impact of different playing surfaces on twisting and turning (project funded by FIFA) and shoe-foot interaction (projects funded by Umbro).

Our world-class Biomechanics facilities include a 70 m runway, a 100 m2 research lab, and a CAREN virtual reality immersive environment. We work with the latest equipment for motion analysis (two Qualisys systems, two Vicon systems), force analysis (6 Kistler force platforms), equipment for lightweight acceleromerty (Entran), in-sole pressure measurement (RSScan), video analysis (SIMI Motion), isometric and isokinetic muscle function (Biodex System 3), electromyography (Noraxon telemetric, Biolab Systems hardwired). Staff members work in football-related areas such as technique analysis, strength and conditioning, injury prevention and gait assessment services, and the design and evaluation of football equipment and playing surfaces. Existing collaborations are with football governing bodies such as FIFA and FA, as well as manufacturers of artificial turf or footwear.
