Physical Activity and Health

The members of staff who work in the area of physical activity, exercise and health are Professor Stuart Fairclough, who leads the group, and  Dr. Dave Richardson, and Dr. Lawrence Foweather. Much of their health-related football work has involved the design and implementation of community interventions. For example, the joint venture between the University, Everton Football Club and Everton in the Community to establish a unique satellite centre at the stadium of the club (Goodison Park) called the Everton Active Family Centre. The Centre aims to use the powerful football brand to motivate and inspire people within the local community to make positive, healthy choices. This work has already gained international credibility and has been championed by the World Health Organisation. Another example is a project called SmokeFree Sports, which trains the coaches at Premier League football community schemes (Liverpool Football Foundation and Everton in the Community) to deliver smoke free messages to children and young people. The University has also worked with both football clubs as part of SmokeFree Sports to develop policies and establish a Charter to prevent and protect children and young people from smoking in football and other sports.

The group conduct innovative, world-leading research in physical activity, sedentary behaviour and nutrition in people of all ages. Their multi-disciplinary research skills and expertise enable them to design, implement, deliver, monitor and evaluate laboratory- and community-based projects and programmes that are cross-sectional, interventional and longitudinal in nature. Their research uses robust scientific tools to measure clinical, behavioural and psychosocial aspects of health in order to provide valuable understanding as to how a professional football club can act as a vehicle for health engagement and improvement.
